SOMEWHERE IN TIME celebra la curiosità e l’esplorazione degli artisti contemporanei, presentando una serie di lavori che sono la rielaborazione individuale di citazioni e ispirazioni dei modelli del passato. Il titolo della mostra si riferisce a un luogo nel tempo, senza dire dove e quando. L’intento è quello di trascendere queste realtà fisse, fondendo il passato e il presente in un’unica dimensione.
Nel corso del tempo infatti, molti artisti hanno guardato ai grandi Maestri del passato per trovare ispirazione ed esplorare nuove possibilità all’interno delle loro pratiche.
Per l’occasione, è stato chiesto ad ogni artista partecipante di scegliere un capolavoro e di utilizzarlo come punto di partenza per nuovi dialoghi. Il risultato è una mostra che spazia dal primo rinascimento, al barocco, al modernismo, coprendo alcune delle epoche più importanti della storia dell’arte.
Attraverso un’indagine giocosa di forma, colore, proporzione, composizione e trama, gli artisti in mostra esplorano il loro interesse comune per la natura, la psicologia e la mitologia e reinterpretano in modo nuovo e inaspettato i loro Maestri.
I dipinti in SOMEWHERE IN TIME fanno riferimento a capolavori di Piero della Francesca, Peter Paul Rubens, Ferdinand Hodler e Henri Matisse: incoraggiano gli spettatori a confrontarsi criticamente con le loro idee preesistenti e ad adottare uno sguardo nuovo.
SOMEWHERE IN TIME offre una visione della psiche di ciascun artista e rivela le dualità che ispirano le loro opere d’arte, dal reale al surreale, dalla spiritualità alla corporeità, dall’arcadia all’urbanità, dal subconscio alla coscienza. Simboli sognanti come fiori, teschi, prati rigogliosi e figure femminili fantastiche sono accostati a gesti astratti ed eterei. Insieme si comportano come un pendolo: quando una sfera viene sollevata e rilasciata, colpisce tutte le sfere successive, spostando rapidamente l’energia dal passato al presente e viceversa.
Diane Chappalley (*1991), nata in Svizzera, vive e lavora a Londra. Nei suoi dipinti e nelle sue sculture, l’artista pone l’accento sul simbolismo e sul linguaggio poetico. Crea nuovi ambienti psicologici che riflettono sensazioni interiori e cercano di catturare emozioni passate o sentimenti vissuti nella vita personale dell’artista.
Diane Chappalley Ha esposto nel Regno Unito e a livello internazionale. Si è laureata alla Slade School of Fine Art con il massimo dei voti nel 2017 e precedentemente ha conseguito il BA alla City and Guilds of London Art School, dove ha ricevuto il Chadwyck-Healey Prize for Painting. Le sue opere sono state selezionate per premi come il Marmite Painting Prize (Block 336, Londra, Highlanes Gallery, Irlanda) e FBA Futures 2017 (Mall Gallery, Londra). Nel 2018 ha ricevuto il premio Alice Bailly in Svizzera. Diane è stata artista in residenza presso l’Academy of Visual Art della Hong Kong Baptist University nel 2017 e l’anno scorso è stata artista in residenza presso nthspace Torino a Torino, Italia. Le sue opere sono incluse nella collezione d’arte HSBC, nella collezione dell’Università di Oxford, nella collezione d’arte contemporanea CHUV, Losanna, CH e nella collezione dell’X Museum, Pechino.
La teologia, la letteratura nera americana e il surrealismo sono tra le fonti di ispirazione di Whit Harris (*1985). Le opere dell’artista di Brooklyn, New York, raffigurano figure fantastiche con tratti facciali esagerati, che scompaiono e riappaiono in ambienti tetri. I suoi mondi immaginari traggono ispirazione da modernisti come Picasso, Chagall e Matisse, e si spingono fino all’astrologia e al misticismo della cosmologia greco-romana.
Whit Harris ha tenuto la sua prima mostra personale Water Bearers al Lauren Powell Project di Los Angeles questa primavera e ha recentemente esposto in Byways: Three Artists On Brooklyn’s Black Waterfront alla Brooklyn College Library Gallery. Whit è attualmente l’artista in residenza presso Artshack a Brooklyn, New York. Ha conseguito un Master of Fine Art all’Hunter College e un Bachelor of Art alla Stony Brook University e vive a Brooklyn, New York.
Soko (*1995), nata in Argentina, è un’artista autodidatta che vive e lavora a Berlino. Il suo approccio è influenzato dalla poesia, dalla natura e dalla filosofia buddista. La sua pratica è spontanea e intuitiva. Il lavoro di Soko è incentrato sul sentimento e sul colore, scardinato e allo stesso tempo armonico, soprattutto spirituale. L’artista crea lussuose texture superficiali con le sue pennellate, che muove liberamente sulla tela.
Soko ha studiato Architettura presso l’Università di Architettura, Design e Urbanistica – UBA di Buenos Aires. Il suo approccio alla pittura è stato da autodidatta. Nel 2019 ha partecipato a mostre collettive (Ausdrucke) presso la galleria Amuleto (Buenos Aires, Argentina) ed è stata selezionata in concorsi nazionali come il Bancor XII painting award. Nel 2020 ha partecipato alla mostra Synchrony Exhibition Aumented Reality alla Trinity Gallery (Seoul, Corea del Sud) e a mostre alla Amuleto Gallery (Barcellona, Spagna). È stata invitata a partecipare a un progetto interdisciplinare con SomosMolde, in cui i suoi dipinti e il design degli abiti si fondono per creare pezzi tessili unici. Ha partecipato al programma PAC Artists 2020 a Gachi Prieto, Argentina.
Dante Cannatella (*1992), nato a New Orleans e ora residente a Brooklyn, realizza opere che si basano su esperienze personali, ricordi e sogni, ma che esistono in un mondo fittizio. I dipinti di Dante Cannatella esplorano ciò che accade quando il paesaggio si riappropria della città, quando i confini tra interno ed esterno si confondono e come le vite vengono vissute di fronte all’incertezza e all’impermanenza.
Dante Cannatella ha conseguito un MFA presso l’Hunter College di New York. Ha partecipato a numerose mostre collettive come Night Owl, MassimoDecarlo (spazio virtuale); It’s true what they say, Fireplace project; Last Call, Bradley Ertaskiran gallery; Mrs Robinson, Fireplace project; Untitled Art Fair, Regular Normal gallery; The Privilege of Getting Together- Anna Zorina gallery; 3 day weekend, Fireplace project. Dante Cannatella ha anche realizzato mostre personali come Heat con Shoot the Lobster e Nascent Digitalism presso UUU. Ha in programma due mostre, una personale con Areum Yang, galleria F2T, Milano, e una personale presso Bradley Ertaskiran, Montreal da febbraio a giugno 2023.Ha partecipato a una residenza d’artista presso la Wolf Hill artist residency e nel settembre 2022 al Macedonia Institute.

SOMEWHERE IN TIME celebrates each artists’ curiosity and exploration into both the personal and historical elements that are often present in the medium of painting. The exhibition title refers to a place in time, without saying where and when. The agency of this show is to transcend the fixed realities of time by fusing the past and the present into a single dimension.
For this occasion each participating artist has carefully chosen a masterwork as a point of departure for new dialogues to be had. These works span from early renaissance, baroque, and modernism, covering some of the most important epoques of art history.
Through playful re-investigation of shape, color, proportion, composition and storyline, the artists’ shared interest in nature, psychology and mythology is newly explored.
The resulting paintings in SOMEWHERE IN TIME reference masterpieces by Piero della Francesca, Peter Paul Rubens, Ferdinand Hodler and Henri Matisse, encouraging viewers to critically engage with their pre-existing ideas about the acclaimed paintings in unexpected news ways.
SOMEWHERE IN TIME shares insight into each artists’ psyche, and reveals the dualities that inspire their artwork ranging from the real vs. surreal, spirituality vs. bodily, arcadian vs. urban, and subconscious vs. conscious. Dreamy symbols like flowers, skulls, lush lawns, and fantastical female figures are juxtaposed with ethereal abstract gestures. Together they behave like a pendulum: when one sphere is lifted and released, it strikes all the consecutive spheres, moving energy swiftly from the past to the present, and onward.
Diane Chappalley (*1991), born in Switzerland, lives and works in London. In her paintings and sculptures, the artist puts an emphasis on symbolism and poetic language. She creates new psychological environments that reflect inner sensations and seek to capture past emotions or feelings experienced presently in the artist’s personal life.
Diane Chappalley has exhibited in the UK and internationally. She graduated from her Master’s Degree at the Slade School of Fine Art on the dean’s list in 2017 and previously from her BA at City and Guilds of London Art School, where she received The Chadwyck-Healey Prize for Painting. Theology, Black American literature, and surrealism are among Whit Harris’ (*1985) sources of inspiration. The works of the Brooklyn, New York-based artist depict fantastical figures with exaggerated facial features, who vanish and resurface in gloomy environments. Her imaginative worlds draw inspiration from modernists like Picasso, Chagall and Matisse, and delve even further into astrology and the mysticism of Greco-Roman cosmology.
Whit Harris had her first solo exhibition Water Bearers at Lauren Powell Project in Los Angeles this spring, and recently exhibited in Byways: Three Artists On Brooklyn’s Black Waterfront at Brooklyn College Library Gallery. Whit is the current Artist in Residence at Artshack in Brooklyn, New York. Soko (*1995) born in Argentina, is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Berlin. Her approach is influenced by poetry, nature, and buddhist philosophy. She is spontaneous and intuitive in her practice. Soko’s work is about feeling and color, unhinged, and yet simultaneously harmonic, above all it is spiritual. The artist creates luxurious surface textures with her brushstrokes, which she freely moves across the canvas.
Soko studied Architecture at the University of Architecture, Design and Urbanism – UBA in Buenos Aires. Her approach to painting was self-taught. During 2019 she participated in group exhibitions (Ausdrucke) at Amuleto Gallery (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and was selected in national competitions such as the Bancor XII painting award. In 2020 she participated in the exhibition Synchrony Exhibition Aumented Reality at Trinity Gallery (Seoul, South Korea) and in exhibitions at Amuleto Gallery (Barcelona, Spain). She was invited to participate in an interdisciplinary project with SomosMolde where her paintings and clothing design cohesive to create unique textile pieces. She participated in the PAC Artists 2020 Program in Gachi Prieto, Argentina.
Dante Cannatella (*1992), born in New Orleans and now resides in Brooklyn, makes works that are based on his personal experiences, memories, and dreams yet exist in a fictitious world. Dante Cannatella’s paintings explore what happens when the landscape reclaims the city, when lines between inside and outside become blurry, and how lives are lived in the face of uncertainty and impermanence.
Dante Cannatella holds a MFA degree from Hunter College, NY. He participated in numerous group exhibitions such as Night Owl, MassimoDecarlo (virtual space), It’s true what they say, Fireplace project, Last Call, Bradley Ertaskiran gallery, Mrs Robinson, Fireplace project, Untitled Art Fair, Regular Normal gallery, The Privilege of Getting Together- Anna Zorina gallery, and 3 day weekend, Fireplace project. Dante Cannatella also had solo exhibitions such as “Heat with Shoot the Lobster, and Nascent Digitalism at UUU. He has two upcoming shows, a 2 person show with Areum Yang, F2T gallery, Milan as well as a solo exhibition at Bradley Ertaskiran, Montreal. From February-June 2022He attended an artist residency at Wolf Hill artist residency, and in September 2022 at Macedonia Institute.
